As supplies of filtering facepiece respirators can become depleted, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends practices for limited re-use of N95 or N95-equivalent filtering respirators in the US.
Meanwhile, the Food and Drug Administration issued an emergency use authorization on sterilization of medical devices that would open up the re-use of N95 masks originally designed for single use.
Low temperature sterilization systems mainly use vaporized hydrogen peroxide (VHP) to sterilize reusable personal protective equipment, such as N95 and N95-equivalent respirators. The VHP decontamination process is proven to destroy a wide range of microorganisms, including bacterial spores, viruses, and fungi. PeroxyChem, recently acquired by Evonik, developed a high-purity solution for use in the VHP process that can be used directly for medical sterilization, including mask decontamination, without additional modifications.
